Dontcha wonder what happened to him when Lord V attacked the Castle? Everyone else did something, yet he wasn't mentioned.

We have no idea how old he was ... or when he started teaching at Hogwarts.
I presume he was teaching 50 years prior, but could not say for sure.

Maybe that is why he believes it is a complete myth ... he was not present at the time the Chamber of Secrets was open. It is all speculation naturally.

The fact that he isn't mentioned more often or we know little of his past, may be just that he IS such a minor character, and JK didn't see the need to explain.
