New Harry Potter fan theory connects the Dursleys to the Deathly Hallows

J.K. Rowling’s not the only one still thinking about Harry Potter years after the series ended.

The author has become famous for continuing to offer up new explanations and analyses into her work, but equally energetic fans are doing the same thing. Reddit user iShootWithaCamera, for instance, has a new analysis that connects the Deathly Hallows to the Dursleys.

The Deathly Hallows didn’t enter the series by name until the final book, while the Dursleys faded into the background after providing crucial context to the first few, so it’s understandable why no one has thought to connect them, but the parallel is striking.

In the first three books, Harry receives three single Christmas gifts from his adopted family. They’re meant to be meager, but iShootWithaCamera points out that they each resemble one of the magical Deathly Hallows. In The Sorcerer’s Stone, the Dursleys send Harry a 50-pence piece; in Chamber of Secrets the gift is a toothpick; and in Prisoner of Azkaban they send a single tissue. The gifts resembles the Resurrection Stone, the toothpick the Elder Wand, and the tissue is like the Invisibility Cloak.

It could all be a coincidence, of course, but the Invisibility Cloak’s presence in the series has always hinted Rowling may have been planning the Deathly Hallows for a long time. It remains to be seen whether Rowling’s famously prolific Twitter will end up responding to this analysis.
