It was sunny and gorgeous until around four pm, then it dropped a few degrees and started snowing nicely. There was a crash on I-70 that had it shut down completely for 6 hrs; at ten pm they still weren't sure how many vehicles were involved, all due to icy and white-outs. People here don't seem to understand that its winter in the Northern Hemisphere....

Having the highway closed must have made for a nice quiet evening for you.

Got down to -18°F (-28°C) this morning. Rather unusual for this late in the season in these parts.
A pleasant surprise in addition to the snow we had a couple of days ago.

The quiet was really nice! All I could hear was the creek, like it should be in the mountains.

Sounds wonderful Figgy!

We got one hell of a mess Wednesday morning. On the way to work, an 18 wheeler went speeding by us in the fast lane. Ahead was an onramp, a black SUV had moved over to let traffic on. The speeding trucker had time to slow down but didn't. Guess he assumed the SUV was going to speed like he was. He wound up slamming on his brake and almost lost control. Luckily we were far enough back to slow down but we thought sure that nut was going to take out a few cars. The SUV finally was able to move back to the right lane, the idiot trucker sped back up again. Stupid ass.

A short time later there was a 70+ car pile up on northbound I-95 near Carmel, which is about a 30 minute drive south of Bangor where I work. Thank God no one was killed tho there were a couple of serious injuries. No one from my agency was involved but one of the others had an employee caught up in that mayhem. He's in his 70s...doing okay but is going to be out of work for quite some time.

Yikes! Our news showed footage of your huge pile-up. After we hit 70 yrs (some even younger) things that should be healed-from take a bigger toll on a person's system. A lot of times an older person survives the broken hip, or whatever, only to begin a downward spiral that ultimately shortens their life. Its worrisome whenever I hear the news anchor say the old guy has "non-life-threatening injuries".

As of today Denver has broken a 100 year old record making this now officially "The Snowiest February On Record" - which is interesting as 10 of Feb's days have also reached record high temps (60s & 70s).

All the creeks are frozen here as well.
Luckily most of the traffic accidents around here haven't resulted in too many injuries.
Still cold.

wow - some amazing stuff happening.
soooo glad you are safe Moo!
Figgy - amazing! at least the 'highs' will melt all that snow sooner!
Paint - don't the creeks normally freeze?

Our creeks, lakes - everything is generally frozen here by mid to late Dec. And when our snow falls, it generally never goes away until March or April or sometimes May. We don't normally get the large lake-effect snow, but there are years when the snow accumulates to a rather significant height.

This year (knock on wand wood-and anything else that may be magical) we have had a rather mild winter. Temps have been higher than normal (except for the last week or so, brrrrr), snowfall has been significantly lower than the norm, and the roads rather safe. The waters are still frozen naturally (don't think we will ever have that mild of a winter).

And I haven't been complaining like I normally do on the site all winter long - hooray! (I am sure everyone appreciates this!)

Of course they do. Creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, they're all frozen.

If they didn't, how could ice fishermen drive their pickups out onto the ice, to go fishing?*

*Never quite understood the hole (pun intended) ice fishing attraction...
