Had one hell of a downpour Friday morning on the way to work. About halfway there, still on the interstate, all of a sudden...SPLASH! Big time torrential downpour. Had to slow down quite a bit but some guy in a car slowed down to 35! A lot of drivers, me included, damn near hit him. We all had to brake suddenly just to miss him.

Just before my exit, the rain had come down so hard and so fast, a small pond formed all the way across the interstate. No choice but to drive through it; everyone splashing water everywhere. Thank goodness I have Stabilitrak and AWD. Didn't get thunderstorms until after I got to work. whew on that one. Cleared out and cooled off nicely. The afternoon was so refreshing!

We would love to have your rain! Officially we are getting the tail end of some tropical storm, but it really isn't even wetting the dust down. Its been being in the high-90sF/36-38C here for ages. I'm at some friends house watching their critters for a couple days and haven't even gone outside for the last two … The TV weather was saying that of the first 8 days of July, 7 have been 90s or higher...and dry.

Well, yesterday things got a bit tense over our little town (about an hour before I finished work).
A nasty fast moving storm tried to turn into a tornado ... so glad it didn't succeed

Everyone's phone started blaring/beeping with the new national warning system we have, letting us know which areas were in Critical Alert/Warning areas. The first critical area was at a popular area at the river (about 30 miles from the city) where my daughter was. I texted her right away, but she must have seen the storm coming so she got the heck out before it hit. The critical alerts continued to come as the storm quickly moved east.

Not sure if any tornado formed within that nasty system, but I do appreciate that it did not completely form or touch down at home. I will likely hear more news as the day progresses. We ended up with hail and about 1-¼" of rain. The high winds whipped around the yard pretty good, but I haven't seen any real damage (yet)

And you didn't even mention the shades of apricot and bruising those kinds of storms have....

Wow, Howler, that's scary. We get EF0 tornadoes here sometimes, every once in a while an EF1. And the same thing usually happens here...weather turns crappy just before the end of the work day or having to drive thru it on the way to work. Been nice here most of the week. No major storms until Tuesday when the dew points get past 70. Supposed to be beautiful after that, until the weekend.

Figgy - temps have calmed down to mid to upper 80s; mid 70s so far this weekend. The southern part of Maine is going thru drought conditions at the moment. Most of the rain has been in my area, east and north of me. Only a few towns in southern Maine drenched but not anywhere near enough. The south needs a really good soaking. Minus any tornadoes.

We are back to melting. It actually rained a couple days ago, but it would have to do that every day for a week or ten days before we'd even make a dent in how dry it is... then we could whine about the flash flooding in the fire scars.

Flooding is always a concern. No fire scars here but when the mountains get the bulk of the rain, it has to go somewhere so it downhill is the choice. Sometimes overflows rivers and streams.

Well, we're back to melting only because the dew points are going to be 70. Yuck. Rain most of the week; a couple of days reprieve but still cloudy and humid then more rain. Hopefully relief will come by next weekend.

OMG ... the mother of all tornado clouds hovered over our little town a couple evenings ago while I am away; sis sent me a pic from the deck. There are a few pics online that I will try to post. I thank God nothing came of it. What a crazy crazy insane weather year in our little neck of the woods! Never have there been so many tornado warnings, sightings and touchdowns near our area. I hope this is a "one-off" year.

Ours is nuts, too.
Normally tornadoes here are only out on the Plains, but this year several have been sighted in a couple of the high valleys (we call the high/big valleys "parks").
Monday, one of the small towns had a foot and a half of hail in 20 minutes.
We have had thirty+ over-90F/32-40C days already this year
