London (AFP) - After years of squabbling, Harry Potter's best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger finally became an item -- but now their creator JK Rowling has admitted she made a mistake by marrying them off.

Hermione -- whose quick wits get the teen wizards out of many a scrape in Rowling's hit novels -- would have been better off with hero Harry, the British author said in comments published by the Sunday Times newspaper.

In fact, Ron and Hermione would likely have ended up in marriage counselling, Rowling suggested.

"For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron," Rowling says in an interview with Wonderland magazine, previewed by the Sunday Times and due out next Friday.

"I know, I'm sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I'm absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility.

"Am I breaking people's hearts by saying this? I hope not."

Rowling's interviewer in Wonderland was none other than British actress Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the blockbuster movie series based on the Potter books.

The actress agreed with Rowling, saying: "I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy."

Rowling has sold more than 450 million copies of the Harry Potter books, which were made into eight films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Watson and Rupert Grint as Ron.

The franchise has made Rowling an estimated fortune of £560 million ($920 million, 683 million euros), according to the Sunday Times' Rich List 2013.

Actually - I think Ron and Hermione made a good match.
she is brilliant and a control freak - he is pretty laid back and needs direction. When she starts nagging too much he lets her know and tells her to lay off. I could see some disagreements between the two, but all married people have disagreements. Hermione's career would make her head-happy; but I believe someone low key and family oriented like Ron would make her heart-happy.
(opposites attract)

I could never see Harry with Hermione ... never
Harry and Ginny make a good match - both strong characters; similar dispositions.

I agree with the above.
But I also think the Hermione- Ron thing is a bit of a stretch. It may work for awhile, however I don't think it would come even close to standing the test of time. :twocents-02cents:

I agree wholeheartedly.
But i think Ron-Hermione were destined. I've seen worse couplings make it work.

I think she's over-thinking things. I admit, i don't like Harry-Ginny... but i see her reasoning why they are together.
She should just leave it alone now.

PS. 19 years they are still together. Why is this an issue now?

I agree with Howler!
Guys usually marry someone like their mother. I see Hermione and Molly as a lot alike - especially after the battle and Molly proving beyond a doubt how powerful of a Witch she is.
Plus, Ron is an awful lot like his dad. The movies tried to turn him into an idiot sidekick, but in the books he's bright and capable (he IS a Gryffindor after all), just a little lacking in motivation when he isn't really interested in the subject at hand. His magical ability and focus really comes around toward the end of the saga, as he matures, quite similar to the way Arthur is presented throughout.

Molly and Arthur work well together for the same reasons Hermione and Ron do.

Poor Harry has always been emotionally deprived, he doesn't need a mate who is cerebral. He'd be miserable, but not find it out befor a long time and some ulcers.

I am wondering if this comment isn't due to the fact that Rowling did not marry her best friend from high school
she did fashion Hermione as herself and Ron as Sean Harris (to whom book two was dedicated)
