What would happen if Knockturn Alley breeders started breeding their own Pygmy Puffs for profit so quickly that it created a Pygmy Puff overpopulation crisis in the Wizarding World? Imagine that George and Ron have stopped breeding Pygmy Puffs and began taking the homeless Puffs in off the streets and adopting them out to good homes, but it still isn’t enough. That is the kind of parallel we are facing right now in our world with cats and dogs.
Every year 6-8 million cats and dogs enter U.S. shelters and only about 3-4 million of them find good homes, according to a 2014 report by the Humane Society of the United Sates. While Pygmy Puffs may not be real or overpopulating the Wizarding World, using the Puffs’ hypothetical exploitation as an analogy, Harry Potter fans can help the cats and dogs in our world in many ways! One way is to always adopt animals from shelters instead of buying them from pet stores or breeders. Another way to help stop the companion animal overpopulation crisis is to always have your companion animal spayed or neutered.
