How much would you pay to party with JK Rowling? Cursed Child gala tickets going for £300 - and rising

JK Rowling will make a rare public appearance in September
Telegraph Reporters
12 MAY 2016 • 9:30AM
Harry Potter fans hoping to get the chance to join JK Rowling for a gala showing of her upcoming West End play are expected to raid their bank accounts ahead of a charity auction that has launched this morning.

The author will introduce a performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on September 18, tickets for which will be auctioned to raise money for Rowling's charity, Lumos - with prices starting at £150 for two, including entry to the after-show party and a signed copy of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play script book.

Organisers of the gala performance say every penny will go to the charity's Families Not Orphanages Fund and directly help children around the world to leave orphanages and return to a family life.

Georgette Mulheir, chief executive of Lumos, said: "This special gala performance is not only a wonderful opportunity for fans to see the play but it will help raise awareness of the vulnerable, voiceless children living in orphanages around the world and play its part in helping to get them home and back to a loving family, where they belong."

How can I get tickets?

As those who struggled to get Cursed Child tickets in October will know, this is one hot event. This time, fans will be expected to save up and stump up to gain entry to the gala performance, for which tickets will be auctioned.

So far, 800 tickets - in sets of two, three and four – have been made available on the auction website, with prices starting between £150 and £300.

Givergy, who are organising the auction, have said that there will be another release at a yet-to-be-confirmed point in the next 10 days. Sign up at wearelumos.org/ worldwide/#getinvolved to find out when the next sales begin.

At the time of writing, no bids have been made on the tickets, but with auction closing dates varying between four and 11 days away, prices could rise to thousands of pounds in coming days.

To make a bid, go to givergy.com/charity/lumos, enter your bid and payment details. The website encourages you to keep bidding as the auction goes on to be in with a chance of winning.

The official script book of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts I & II will be published on July 31, 2016. To order from the Telegraph for £20 with free P&P, call 0844 871 1515 or visit books.telegraph.co.uk

What We Know

Image

1. It’s the eighth Harry Potter story.
It's a brand new story and it picks up where the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off
2. It's all about Albus.
The play will focus on father-of three Harry and his youngest son, Albus Severus
3. It’s not a prequel.
Of this we can be absolutely sure. In June 2015 J.K. Rowling tweeted the fact three times in less than half an hour: "NOT a prequel. Not. A. Prequel."
4. It's at the Palace Theatre in London.
Fun fact: The theatre is right by Charing Cross Road – where you can find The Leaky Cauldron in the Harry Potter stories
5. It's a play in two parts.
As explained on Pottermore: "Part One will only be half of the story, so the experience would be incomplete without seeing Part 2". You can choose if you want to see both parts on the same day, or further apart
6. It will also be released as a book.
The script (not a novel) will become available to fans at midnight on July 31 - Harry Potter's birthday.

We used to have amazing release parties at The Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver. I'm still waiting to hear from them about if they intend to have the same kind of Potter blow-out as they used to.

Maybe Tonks can go to this fund-raiser when she's in England to see the Play, and report back to us!!!!

Did you ever take any photos of those release parties Figgy?

Around here, the biggest thing was a midnight release party for one of the books. The staff did not even get dressed up for it; it was more of a stand in line - buy the book - leave the store. I was dreadfully disappointed. I remember that a few of the ones standing in line were dressed up, but they were very young.

Yes! I have many pics.
My buddy, who is a veterinarian, always goes as McGonagall, Her hubby frequently does this black cloak and looks seriously ominous. Their kiddo was in a dither one time about a costume and they ended up buying about seven yards of shiny pink material which, when accompanied by her fave tee-shirt, they wound around her and turned her into Pavarti Patil (long braid down her back with bling to make it dressy). I frequently go as Mrs Figg (bet you never would have guessed that one.... her costume is really comfy, though, especially when its hot weather... floppy plaid slippers, housecoat, glasses hanging on a string around my neck, big green net bag with clanky cat food cans in it, and a photo album with about 40 cat pics {some real photos of my cats, most cut from calendars, and magazines}), or a creepy witch from Knockturn Alley (carrying a large black cauldron with plastic snakes and lizards trying to escape from it, and individually wrapped gummy bugs to pass around), and once as Walburga Black (but QUICKLY discovered the picture frame to be cumbersome and limiting - though it was great fun when McGonagall would flip the curtain closed to shut me up... "Filth!", "Mudbloods!", "stains on our family name".... ).

The Tattered Cover would have a whole "Diagon Alley" set up between the side of their building and the record store next door. {The record store is named Twist-n-Shout and at Halloween the two stores have a big party they call Twisted and Tattered".} There'd be a 3 Broomsticks with butterbeer and chocolate frogs, and other things to drink or eat. They'd have "Make Your Own Potions Bags" area, and a big black-and-white-squares floor to play life-sized Wizards Chess on. One time a guy brought a lathe and was turning wands (too pricey for my budget, but fascinating to watch). There were places for kids to Potter-themed crafts and get faces painted, and some games to keep everyone occupied.

We had some amazing costumed people there - like a PERFECT Snape - he could even swoop great. And there was a guy who had to be 6'6" dressed as Hagrid. There was an outstanding Umbridge, and lots of "House" colours, a fair few Quidditch players, and a really good Voldie {who took a "bald" wig/head-cover and stretched it over his face....'cept he could eat or drink anything, so like my Walburga, I'm gonna bet it was a one time wearing)

The absolute BEST part was being able to talk to anyone standing around about Harry Potter without them looking at you like you were a couple bricks short of a load {"Aren't you a little old for Harry Potter?"} ... and not having to explain the entire back story to contrast and compare some points.

There's a bookstore not too far from me, that has thrown a few parties. If fact, JK was there while touring the US, hawking the first book.
Back before anyone had ever heard of Harry. I will have to check their website for a possible event.

Ditto, on the photos. :happy-bouncygreen:
