This year, Pottermore Publishing is launching a series of non-fiction eBook shorts called Harry Potter: A Journey Through…, adapted from the audiobook Harry Potter: A History of Magic – inspired by the British Library exhibition of the same name. Read on to learn all about them.

Prepare to delve deeper into the rich history of magic with this new series of eBook shorts, inspired by the British Library exhibition and its companion books, Harry Potter: A History of Magic.

The series features four bitesize reads, each themed by Hogwarts lessons, and will take you back in time once again to learn about the traditional folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories, accompanied by some new, gorgeous line drawings from London-based artist Rohan Daniel Eason. You may remember Harry Potter – A History of Magic and the family edition, Harry Potter – A Journey Through A History of Magic, which came out back in 2017. This was followed by the audiobook last year, which featured expanded interviews with the exhibition curators, narrated by Natalie Dormer. These eBook shorts are adapted from the audiobook and are a chance to absorb the colourful characters and curious incidents of the real history of magic in a more compact form – perfect for the train or whatever Muggle transport you prefer.

In addition to exploring the origins of magic through history and folklore, the eBook shorts will also feature notes, manuscript pages and charming sketches as previously seen in Harry Potter: A History of Magic.

The eBooks to look forward to are as follows: Harry Potter: A Journey Through Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts, Harry Potter: A Journey Through Potions and Herbology, Harry Potter: A Journey Through Divination and Astronomy, and Harry Potter: A Journey Through Care of Magical Creatures, which will be published in the coming months.

The first pair, themed on Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts, and Potions and Herbology, respectively, will be published on 27 June, while the others will follow soon after. Stay tuned!

The eBooks will launch in English, French, Italian, and German initially, and are available to pre-order at Amazon UK and Amazon US, Apple and Kobo.

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling announced Thursday that she’s releasing four brand new stories in the magical series

These new eBook editions to the mythical tome will be available for $2.99 apiece in June through Pottermore — Rowling’s e-commerce and digital publishing website for all things in the Potter universe.

The “bitesize” stories — which can be pre-ordered on Amazon and Apple — will be much like the author’s previous “extra content” dispatches, such as “Harry Potter: A History of Magic.”

Rowling says these new installments will “take you back in time once again to learn about the traditional folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories,” providing insight on various subjects learned at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, such as Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Herbology, Divination, Astronomy and Care of Magical Creatures.


“Prepare to delve deeper into the rich history of magic (be it our own Muggle history, or the magical world created by J.K. Rowling) with this new series of eBook shorts, inspired by the British Library exhibition and its companion books, Harry Potter: A History of Magic,” the Pottermore announcement reads.

The series will be illustrated by London-based artist Rohan Daniel Eason, known for his surreal and spooky style.

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” was a global bestseller in 1997, and Rowling went on to add six more books to the series — one for each year of Harry’s education at Hogwarts. The books have since been adapted to film starting in 2001. The cast, including Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), have become international celebrities.

Rowling, who famously began as a struggling single mom barely able to feed her kids, is now reportedly worth $1 billion.

has anyone purchased or read Harry Potter: A History of Magic?

I kind of stopped buying her books after The Cursed Child, so have no idea if these are even purchase worthy.
Any feedback would be great.

Heard about these, too. I'd be interested just to see what they're about. I'm like you, Howler...haven't read anything since The Cursed Child. And no, I haven't read A History of Magic, either.

I didn't read Cursed Child... Or any since. I'm liking FB movies a lot, but... ok, I'm obstreperous. It galled me that Cursed Child was set up for us to have to go to the theater twice for the whole story. If it had been done the way the movies are, where the story hit a conclusion, and it just takes too long to make the next part, so the next installment comes out a year or longer later, I would have been ok about two parts. But it was two from the get-go, and I am still annoyed at WB pulling crap like that to suck more money from us... so I haven't read it or even attempted to see it as a play.

I read Cursed Child, but I cannot say that I enjoyed the read. Apparently the play is coming to Toronto this year. A fellow coworker is thinking about going. Me, absolutely not! The two little books I purchased - Quidditch through the ages and Fantastic Beasts - were for a good cause, therefore worth the few $ . Unfortunately, I can see (but hope in my heart it does not happen) the HP and FB themes getting written and rewritten and rewritten and rewritten like they have been doing with the Star Wars series.

The one book I would have LOVED to own, was the one by Steve VanderArk. JKR and her band of trusty Lawyers certainly squashed that quick enough though. But don't want to start us down that road again, so I won't mention it again; too many bad memories. (end rant)

I am just not sure that the new books are worth the $$$'s
are they interesting/entertaining or are they just another money grab?

Exactly.
I've enjoyed the backstory pieces on Pottermore, but don't trust these to be much different. It would be really neat I if they did turn out to be entertaining stories, but the sources have proven themselves to be less than trustworthy, so I will wait until some reviews come out. They have taught me to be suspicious of their motives.

The schoolbooks were written before JKR was taken over by "the business" of writing. They're still creative.
