Thanks to Harry Potter Theory .

Quote:

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Ron Weasley and all of the problems associated with his wand. A wizard’s wand is his most important tool. It’s the conduit of his power, and for most, the only way they'll ever be able to conjure spells.

So, if wands were so important, why did the Weasley family decide to give Ron a hand-me-down wand that never really served him well?

In fact, Ron’s earliest wand was so bad, that many of his instructors at Hogwarts could never shake their first impression of the boy: that he was a subpar wizard.

So, why didn’t Ron have his own wand? Why was he given Charlie’s? And why did it take him so long to get a new one?

We’ll answer these questions, and more, in today’s video.

I think they can dissect it as much as they want really.
In my opinion ... the story teller (JKR) made those choices for her plots (for all her 7 books) long before she completed the first two books. (how else would Lockhart get obliviated? she likely worked backwards when writing ... knew how the years should end and worked her way around it from end to start) The hand me down wand was to show how poor the Weasleys were; to show how frustrating life was for Ron. Molly and Arthur likely made an agreement long before (when they started having children) that any child of theirs would be rewarded for becoming Prefects - no matter what the cost - most likely a way to encourage their children to be their best at school. Ron was the 6th boy ... he was so used to getting hand me downs all his life already. When Ron became a prefect, he also got a present as a reward ... even though it was quite costly. JKR also likely wanted to create audience sympathy for Ron's character.

mind you ... it is just my theory.

I agree with what you're saying.

I also think that having a marginal tool added to his being discounted frequently by others, which added to his feelings of inadequacy, that he already had a problem with. All his brothers had stood out, so he was intimidated by how he could ever match up to each of the talents they'd starred so highly in. (His Mirror of Erised vision pretty much slapped us across the head with that, besides being a foreshadowing of things to come in his story.)

I wondered more about how Charlie could have been chosen by another wand when this one was still viable. The only things I could come up with were that maybe he had evolved into someone very different from the eleven-year-old that got it from Ollivander's, OR that he needed one specifically tailored to dragon work. Why couldn't it be traded in/sold to help pay for his new one? (Would it have been too magnetized to Weasley-World and not worked at all for an outsider? Or drawn strangers to the Burrow?) Do wands feel things - like rejection because Charlie got another one, and that added to Ron's difficulties with it? (A neurotic wand. *snorf*)
