Thanks to YouTube & Edited By Geo

This guys isn't a fan of the new WB TV series idea - and from a couple of the things he slides into this, he's probably right. Its a lot of the same problems as the Cursed Child had... whoever's in charge is wanting to milk the cash cow more than keep true to the story. I mean, why not. They were only the best selling books before they were even written, and obviously billions of people must be wrong so its ok to change stuff around...

They should have done a Marauders series, like I wanted. But do they listen to me???

Figgy … A Marauder’s series is an AWESOME idea!!!
Hopefully one day it will happen.

Mixed feelings ...
On one hand, the movies (other than the first two) sucked. BIG time.
But even the first two had taken some liberties ... such as giving Ron's lines to Hermione (why???)

The movie franchise was successful, yes. And I get the feeling that the author of that YouTube is one of those who liked the movies. I am unsure if that person actually read the books because a true HP fan (IMO) is a lover of the stories – the original book series. The movies (IMO) butchered the books. IMO, the movies were a cash cow for those who did not read the books. And let's face it; a LOT of people do not read books.

So yes, go ahead and reboot the butcher movies. :teasing-tease: Take those horrid creations and create something better.

Give us something closer to how we visualized the stories (in our mind) as we read them.

The TV series is an opportunity to create a true visual replica of the actual books - ensuring that each character is true to form (not giving one character's lines to another); ensuring that each event from the book gets portraited as they actually happened. Will that happen? Who knows. Only time will tell.

I understand the need for creativity; however, there is NO Need to change, or recreate, or improvise on what is already a magnificent book series. Stop the directors and/or producers from trying to change the books... there is nothing that needs to be changed.

IMO - True HP fans want to see their beloved stories just the way it happened in the books.
And we want that because, to this day, we have been denied it. (thus, reboot)
A true visual adaptation with NO liberties taken
Is that too much to ask???
Each book chapter could be an episode (or 2 or 3 or 4) ... right?

(steps off soapbox)

Honestly, I don't care what color of skin the actors have. As long as the characters and events are true to the book series! Keep the characters as they are in the books - Petunia was thin, blond with a long neck; Snape has a hooked nose and greasy hair; Harry had green eyes, knobbly knees, black hair, and round glasses; Ron is tall, thin (gangling), freckled, big hands & feet and long nose; Hermione had brown eyes, brown bushy hair and large front teeth; F & G were stockier (as was Charlie) and also had freckles. I could go on, but no need … we all know the book characters.

We presume that Snape is caucasian because of Alan Rickman. JKR describes a lot of characters who have "sallow" skin - Quirinus Quirrell, Severus Snape, and Viktor Krum - just to name a few. They could easily be of Asian/Mongoloid, Indigenous, as well as African ... or any mix thereof. (1930’s – “high yaller” (yellow) was a slang used in Harlem describing a Negro’s skin tonescale (as was “high brown", vaseline brown, seal brown, etc).

(steps off soapbox) (again)

I agree with a lot of what you said, but I do care when they re-cast a character in a different race/look. JKR wrote a lot of races and sizes and types in the original stories, and like you said, beloved books is how I want the characters to be.

[I have a huge problem that Hamilton recast historic figures as other races/sizes/types. Its one thing to fluff a person a little (because stars are stars - or had dentists available when the real person didn't), but I much prefer someone who looks fairly close to whoever they are portraying. A blond Lincoln would blow all credibility for me.] I prefer the shows to reflect the books. [C.J. Box has written a contemporary set of books (currently there are 25 of them) about a Ranger, his family and sets of friends, and the amazing area its set in. He's a best selling author. So some bright corporation decides to make them into a TV series. The books are set in Wyoming, more or less now. There are only half a million people in the whole state, lots of First Nation and white guys, very few other races - so of course they cast most of the secondary main characters as black guys, and the very specifically Nordic-looking bad boy with... an oriental person. That character is named Nate Romanowski. *eyeroll* Their costuming person had to be from New York City, and never even seen the Rockies, because all the clothes were so wrong that it was laughable... especially the main character's hat. In the books he's a laconic cowboy type, in the TV show he's a neurotic dork with low self esteem. In the books he knows how one cares for and wears a Stetson cowboy hat, in the TV series he looks like a businessman coming from an upscale cattle auction, rather than an actual cowboy. The hat might have a four inch brim. I was amazed it didn't squeak, "Doofy Dork" with every step he took. It was so messed up and wrong that I couldn't watch an entire episode of it. It was a disaster.

Meanwhile, back to Harry Potter - I want the characters to be true to the books. I want the setting to be true to the books. I don't want Ron's lines given to Hermione, and Ron turned into a unidimensional bit of color. I want Peeves, and a Shrieking Shack, and actual European-style magic (with all the quirky delightful things floating past), and Dumbledore looking like a wizard instead of a homeless guy who lives under the bridge down the way, and ghosts being as normal as tapestries in the Castle, and school robes, and changing staircases, and fantastic beasts skittering around, and portable swamps in hallways, and flashbacks to Marauders or earlier generations, and... and... and...

Just sayin'.

I hear you loud and clear ... couldn't agree more.
JKR described her characters in "living color" detail.
How is it that movie/tv people can get it so wrong. Do they really think it won't matter ... or that we won't notice??
or even worse, that we don't care?
That we should just accept that THEY don't care? (like that's going to happen ... )

good grief.
Get it right people!
give us a true visual of JKR's world.

but if I had to give up one thing, it would be the character's skin color.
but ONLY if they didn't take ANY other liberties!
