Quite a few cultures believe there are stages all souls progress through, that minerals have spirit, then plants, and work your way on up. (We're only the middle level).
Even if Theseus is stiff and unyielding, there are woods that are like that. Have you ever split Elm for firewood? Its like it has grain running both ways. Where most woods kind of crack and fly apart, Elm fights you and you end up having to power-rip it, instead of any clean, easy, well-defined split.
Don't you wonder how one brother is flaky-ish and the other so stiff? ...And they both like the same woman.
