ok - what is up with the Lexicon ... half the time I am unable to access it, and then when I can, the alphabet reference tab has completely disappeared. and if I do manage to get to a page, there is sooooo much information missing. I want to send them a message, but unable to do even that. grrr

I also am not happy with whatever is going on.

In the upper right corner there is a menu tab (the stack of lines in the header picture), which will take you to a particular page.... but it does seem to have lost big chunks of the info. Its not as User Friendly now

It was much better with the alphabets across the top, even though the search feature usually told me whatever I was looking for didn't exist. I discovered that if I put the very same query into plain-old-Google it not only came up with appropriate answers, some of them direct linked to the Lexicon's section that the Lexicon wouldn't pull up.

I've also noticed that Harry Potter Wiki has started getting quite a bit of inaccurate info. I assume its because its so easy to add/change info there. For example, nowhere does JKR say Ted Tonks first name is anything other than "Ted", but the HP Wiki now has him listed as "Edward Tonks". There's also lots of verbosity now.

Thanks Figgy
I was able (briefly) to access the (line stack) menu in the upper right corner ... but still, I think when it gets used, there is still a ton of missed information. For example, if I select "characters" -> "more" -> then scroll to the middle of the page and click on letter M -> ... they don't even have Minerva McGonagall listed. Rather a major character in the HP world I think and she's not even listed. I cannot even find a search box anywhere ...

I emailed the Lexicon my concerns via the feedback option. When I get a reply from them I will be sure to post it here.

I keep finding stuff like that, too. I was looking for the spelling of one of the common spells and couldn't find it anywhere on the Lexicon, but googled it and found it immediately. I hope they are just doing housekeeping rather than its actually lost.

Response from Steve Vander Ark:
Quote:
Hi, Colleen,

The search function was giving us fits, to be honest with you. We've spent the last six months trying to create a search function that more effectively finds what people are looking for, but we've finally realized we're going to have to essentially write a search system from the ground up with built in artificial intelligence in order to make it work properly. You'd think it would be easy, but we're finding that it really isn't.

So in the meantime, we've created landing pages which greatly simplify searches. When you click on characters, to use your example, then click on more, you will find yourself on a landing page which lists all major characters, including McGonagall. There are also links to many different lists which allow users to zero in on what they're looking for. There's a list of Hogwarts staff, for example, although these lists are still being built by our editors and that particular list is still under construction.

Basically, we're replacing the troublesome artificial intelligence with human curated lists and guides. We'll keep working on the search feature, but in the meantime I hope this will help.

They've done similar things before. One of the original founders (and host) of Project Ferret left PF to help Steve Vander Ark create some of the search and tour-of-the-site programming at the Lexicon. I hope they get it functioning better soon. 'Wonder why they couldn't leave it as it was until this was working better...?...

I don't think the (awesome) drop down menu is going to reappear any time soon ... nuts
because now it is more 'labour intensive' - it takes 4 mouse clicks to accomplish what 1 mouse click used to do. All we used to have to do is hover over the section we wanted and click the corresponding letter. That, in my opinion, is not progress. However, since I have not been searching for anything which requires simple access, I cannot say if it would speed things up that way; for example if I was looking for all Hogwarts professors. I will have to explore the menus more.

And yes ... if it was only the search button that needed fixing, why not leave everything else alone.

Mind you ... he has some really cool new art work showing up every week.

Well - Paint is definitely MIA
Was it something we said?
Was it something we did? Or worse, didn't do?
Or did he just stop believing in Magic ... which I find very hard to believe

Do we send a friendly "please-man" to check to see if he is alive?
