lol - their name is splashed all over the place!

the only good thing I have to say about this is that some of the art work is excellent (and I am not talking about any of the shots that came from the movies).

According to some replies in the comments at Pottermore, the site will be changing over the next few months. There may be a chance that we will have a user account

(although, why bother if it will just get wiped from the face of the earth one day just because a very wealthy person gets bored and wants to change things up a bit ... no, not bitter ... lol)

and they will be issuing a wand (see comment above)
and likely houses (see comment above)
and we will eventually have a patronus ... (do I have to say it again?)

time will tell

That's exactly the kind of comment the new site needs to hear!

I just clicked on a topic there about fans' reactions, and... I was pretty insulted and I'm not all that invested in the place. I think Paint might be onto something when he wondered if it might be WB driven.

The Pottermore Correspondent goes snarky about caps lock on a "dislike the new Pottermore" comment, but not for the ones praising the new site that used caps lock. And at the bottom it says "*Editor's note: we're trying to get PMC down to five Caps Locks a day."

no too many positive comments on this site either.
from what I can piece together, we were given between Sept 9 - Sept 16 to print out our certificates. But, unless you went to the facebook site each and every day, you would have never known... and most of the pottermore members never knew. I think they are angry about not knowing - it was like the rug was pulled out from everyone.

who goes to facebook every day ... good grief!

LOL I didn´t even know they had a FB page. I used to go everyday, now maybe once a week. Pottermore....twice a month.. maybe. It was impossible to know what was going to happen unless you read it in the news like I did. Don´t know if they have a Twitter account, that I check everyday but not all the ppl I follow. Remember there are millions of young adults and kids that do check FB and Twitter several times a day. But still, they should have let us know some other way.
I am not pissed about the site though. I was a bit bored and I prefer the waiting, it is like when we waited for a new book to be published.
Don´t like the snarky comments though, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Is Pottermore Just Another Fansite Now?

Posted by: Eleanor September 23, 2015

Pottermore decided earlier this year that its main audience was a lot older than previously thought, so out went the dueling and potion-making and in came… listicles…

The new website seems to be a mish-mash of the Harry Potter books and movies, Fantastic Beasts news, and new J.K. Rowling content. It seems to be taking a leaf out of other Harry Potter fansites… just without the clarity… which led to things like this:
pottermorenew2
followed by this:
pottermorenew3

In the books, Lavender Brown is left “feebly stirring”; in the movies, she’s dead. But Pottermore used film stills with information from the books. It doesn’t even try to differentiate the two.

So book and movie canon are mixed up, but on top of that, when you go to a page like “Writing by J.K. Rowling,” it only shows you selected articles with no way of knowing if you’ve read all the new content or not (frankly, this and the concept art are the only reasons to visit the new Pottermore, but there is no index page, so good luck with finding the art or writing you loved from the old website – because it’ll take you half a day to sift through everything to spot it).

This website’s major failing is that even though most of the old users were young adults, Harry Potter fans come in all shapes and sizes, and the official website should reflect that. The new site hasn’t been translated into other languages yet either, which is another significant teething problem – for a fansite like ours, perhaps it would be excusable… for the official Potter website, it absolutely isn’t.

The other issue that has been coming up is how buzzfeed-like the articles on the site are, with listicles like “8 adorable Harry and Ginny moments” and “11 times Snape was the hardest teacher to please.” There are literally hundreds of sites that already do this. We don’t need Pottermore to do it as well.

The House Cup and games are gone, as is the Sorting Hat and wand-choosing – if and/or when they’ll come back isn’t yet known, although the Patronus quiz is said to be in the works. Basically, they seem to have gotten rid of many of the features that made Pottermore more than just another fansite.

The idea behind this site is that it will be easier to use on a mobile phone and no doubt that it will keep us all up to date on Fantastic Beasts news, as well as continuing to sell the e-books and merchandise. It will, of course, continue to do these things, but the beauty and community of the old Pottermore is gone… in fact, this new Pottermore feels like nothing more than just another Harry Potter fansite.

I want the old site back. This new one seems cheap and it's not easy to navigate. I didn't get to completely go through all the illustrations either and I'm very disappointed it's gone.

If JKR really believes in the Magic she writes about, what she hoped to create for all to feel, she will certainly direct those in charge to revisit this whole new PotterMore decision. If she Is now more interested in money over Magic...... well then... what we have is what we'll get.

The original Pottermore was touted as an interactive experience, along with new background info. It was a whimsical, magical place where you could find people from all walks of life, spanning generations and continents. I came for the new content and stayed for the new friends. Some people say that the chatting and gaming got out of hand, the trolls certainly did get out of hand, but it was still enjoyable, despite its faults.
The creators of the website were clearly surprised by the masses descending on their site (Though I wonder why if they did their marketing homework) and that has been a major problem from the beginning. Deleting the comments was the fist "improvement", and yes, it drastically cut back on trolling. If I amputate my leg, I won't feel a rusted nail in my toe any more, either... yet I'd still recommend removing the nail and treating the wound, instead...
Now they have deleted everything except a few random pieces of Moment artwork and original writing - and even those are very hard to find, because they are drowned in movie stills, the worst quotes they could find (without even proper sources, sometimes), and lots of advertising. It's frustrating to navigate, even for an avid reader like me, without any sort if navigation or index, and gets boring very quickly. on the old Pottermore, one could spend hours doing different things, interacting with the website and other users, now it seems sterile and unimaginative. Who cares what the people creating the website thought about colour-coding pages, if there is essentially nothing contained IN those pages? The website in its current format could have been added to the preexisting one and been a great success. Instead, Pottermore has flummoxed and alienated millions of fans for the sake of more movie publicity.

I'm an old old Pottermore user and I miss the old site. I loved the fact that it was so interactive and you really felt like you were participating. I looked at the new site yesterday and was horrfied--all that fun is gone. Now it's more like reading product descriptions on any commercial site.

I totally agree. I am also an old user but also a mother of two children who love the old Pottermore site as well. My daughter was upset that she never got to finish the interactive moments. Please bring back the original content! I was sorely disappointed in what I found on the new site. What made it special for fans is gone. They could do so much better.

My 9 year old was really getting into Pottermore. She loved finding the beans and frog cards and can't believe it's all just gone! How can they just scrap it all and replace it with something so ordinary? Does anyone know of anything similar my daughter could play instead, she's really disappointed.

updating the ORIGINAL Pottermore, working out bugs, adding new immersive INTERACTIVE content seems most logical, and that is why it no longer exists. It is a fansite at best, a bootleg book at worst. i loved the art of the old site, and most of all the INTERACTIVE elements, which have gotten much better. it should have been developed further along the ORIGINAL mission statement and concept. Make it an app that charges a fee per book, i would have bought all 7!! at once, in a heartbeat... I buy all the books (like creature shop, magical places, etc) so I don't need a website giving a cursory glance of some of the content found in those books. Millions visit the studio tour and the theme park, which has gotten so popular that it has been expanded and cloned.. Clearly there is a desire for the immersion & interaction of those experiences, so does it not follow that there should be a digital immersive, interactive location in cyber space to give the fans what they GLADLY pay for on a daily basis in England, U.S. (2 locations), and Japan? Would it not stand to reason that an immersive interactive cyber space would draw this kind of attention? Especially if it is EXPANDED and UPDATED --maybe a version of Pottermore for Playstation that is an App for tablets, phones, and computers?

Instead Pottermore becomes Potterless, taking an action that makes me think that the OLD Pottermore is like Defense Against the Dark Arts with Lupin, meanwhile the "new" Pottermore/Potterless is like Defense Against the Dark Arts with Umbridge.

All the time and money it took to pave "paradise and put up a parking lot"
could have gone to improvements and additions to the original Pottermore.

I SOOOOOOOO hope someone has cached all the original files and will put up a secret Dumbledore's Army version of the original site as it was, which is still heaps better than the current snooze-fest #Potterless

Honestly though, most of those old things took forever to get to an even barely functioning state and the average user of the site just made an account to blast through the first chapters, get a wand and sorting and never looked at the site again. From what I could tell, very few people used the site continuously and if they did come back, they just came back for the new writings, if they could even remember the silly name they were given that included random numbers for some reason. All the quizzes are apparently coming back and from what I remember that's what the majority of people were even excited for int he first place, plus the new info. I really can't see how people were excited by wizard duelling over and over again using the only spell that worked, or waiting 3 hours for a potion to brew just to come back and mis-click once because flash lagged and lose all their ingredients. Now it will just be a hub for the new info, plus act as a sort of wiki, and the features that were actually used ont he site will eventually return, plus a Patronus quiz. It may be an unpopular opinion among die-hard fans that continued to use Pottermoe, but for those that are even just slightly less interested than fanatic status, this is a much more intuitive and enjoyable experience.

I agree. I wasn't really into the old setup because I felt it was more about games and activities which unlocked content. I couldn't get through some of the games and such because I am not very skilled in it so for the most part I got sorted and barely ever came back. I like that this new site is going to bring back the sorting, wand assignment, and add a patronus test. I also like the combination of wiki information and JK Rowling writings. I love learning new things which means this site is perfect for me.

I'm very sad that the old Pottermore got taken away. I miss my wand, my house, the potions classes, the dueling, the exploration, EVERYTHING about the old site. Sure, they're bringing in a Patronus Quiz, but that doesn't even START to replace what they've taken away. We were a community that bonded over the friendly rivalry between houses, joined forces to find everything we could in the explore the book sections, commiserated over how difficult some of the potions were, they've taken all that away. And now I can't even find anything on the new site. The old site was easier to navigate, it was FUN. It was MAGICAL. This new site just . . . isn't. I want my account back. I want my House. I want my wand. I was a Hufflepuff. I had a 10 3/4 in Hornbeam wand with a Unicorn Hair core. I'm not a fan of this 'update'. I really don't want to go back on Pottermore anymore. They took all the magic out of it.

I think this whole thing came down to money. Sony had huge dollar signs in their eyes at original development, thinking that Pottermore was going to be some kind of cash cow for their new e-reader. But they came into the game way too late. So when profits didn't appear, their support and backing dried up. It then became a rush to get the book moments out ASAP and abandon ship. The site just didn't live up to original plan or expectation. I will admit I quickly went anytime new moments appeared, savoring all the wonderful artwork and new info. But I certainly wasn't hanging around dueling or brewing potions (real life; real job) or chatting in the anonymous common room. I just don't think the site fulfilled whatever its original vision was. I was sorely disappointed by the limited moments in the longest books. I think I'm still missing JKR's original web site more...

I may not have played on Pottermore much because I got busy with my life, but I completely agree with this article. It's literally nothing more than a fansite now with a lot of annoying articles that sound like something that would be posted by BuzzFeed. I would guess about 80% of Potterheads are extremely unhappy with the change. Yeah, we may get sorting and wand choosing back eventually, but it's never going to be as interactive as it was before. It's downgraded to something like the Harry Potter wiki, which is pretty sad. Which is why I decided to join HexRPG, which was similar to Pottermore minus having to go through the storylines. You can go to classes and get points for doing homework. You get sorted. There's also roleplaying threads.

They should have done a mix of the two. This one is easier for Jo to put up new info and for fans to quickly read new stuff without having to discover them and such, but the older one was what made Pottermore, Pottermore. You know? It was magical. It made me connect with my inner potterhead deeper and it was thanks to it that I found my Hogwarts house and dammit if I say that wasn't like a door being opened to me!

I'm kind of in the minority because I couldn't stand the old site. I enjoyed the Sorting (which is apparently coming back) but I hated having to play through all the interactive aspects to get to JKR's new writing/background for characters. The last time I even bothered was around Book 3...after that I would wait until someone else copied and pasted the new info onto a different site. Now I don't have to sign in, and I can get to the new writing without playing anything.

I never really cared about House cups or earning points or anything like that either. I'm sure the new site has glitches (haven't been on it much) but there's already a ton more info about James's family than there was on the old site. Like the author said, the only reason to go is the new info, but that was the only reason I ever went to the old site too. But the old site made it nearly impossible to do only that.

I'm starting to feel like the Pottermore team is 'damned if they do, damned if they don't'. I can't count the number of times I heard fans complain about the old Pottermore site. "It's too glitchy", "the games are for little kids", "I don't like having to search for chocolate frog cards during the serious moments", "It needs to be more mature". They change that, and now everyone's complaining again. I understand some of the complaints, languages especially. And, I agree that they need better organization. But, let's be honest, the main reason most people went on Pottermore was 1. to get a wand/get sorted (those tests will be returning. It says so very clearly in the Pottermore welcome message) and 2. To read the new info by JKR. It seems like the team took those two popular aspects of the site and started to focus the entire site around those things. Also, this way, JK Rowling does have more freedom to release what she wants when she wants to release it. She doesn't have to wait for the graphic arts team to flesh out the moment before new backstories are introduced, she doesn't have to follow the order of the seven books. Now, could this new site stand some improvement? Absolutely! They definitely need better organization of the information. I also am really hoping the listicles will go away when they get more original content from JKR or news about the movies/play. I also hope that the movie stills go away in favor of new artwork based solely on the descriptions from the book. But, let's not be so quick to scream for the old site back before we even really give the new one a chance. No doubt, they'll fix a lot of the issues and, soon, we'll all be enjoying the new format. Just give it a chance! It might surprise you!

We now have this idea that J.K Rowling had a prophesy that foretold of our coming and that she would need to change Pottermore to prevent us from joining it.

"*WHEEZE* THE AMERICAN AND BRITISH GAYS WHO ARE INTERTWINED SHALL FINISH THE HARRY POTTER SERIES ONCE MOOORE, *WHEEZE* AAAND AFTERWARDS THEY SHALL ATTEMPT TO JOIN POTTERMOOOOOOOORE, ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT IT IS NO MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE *WHEEZE*"

Pottermore need to catagorize things. It's a big mess as it is now. There's also writings missing from the old site. The QWC reports aren't on there and neither is some other pieces. It all feels incomplete and rushed. They need to do some major work on the current format. They also need to draw a line between book and movie content. The two don't mesh because they're different canons.

Pottermore was an important part of many who still are emotionally invested in HP, and who loved the special feeling that you got interacting with all of the different sections, being able to delve deep and feel like you could still live the joy that only HP brings. But now...It's like we've been told we're not important.

this article pretty much nailed everything I felt about the redesign of the site. Yeah I appreciate that it's accessible on mobile now but there's so much that it seemed to have lost. I hope they're working on converting the interactive elements and re-incorporate them back in some form, because now Pottermore is a far cry of its former self, and looks like a bland version of Buzzfeed or Nerdist.

While it's cool to be able to learn a lot more about the characters and other elements of the series, I like the interactive part of the old Pottermore site. I'll still read everything in the site though lol

I liked being sorted and having a house page that only Gryffindors could see. I enjoyed the art and content. I do not like the redesign on the New Pottermore. I hate that my profile is just gone. I got lucky by going on the site right before they deleted everything and being able to print out the certificate with my previous info on it. I am so sad that the magic of the community is gone. I don't even enjoy finding the new info on New Pottermore, it is mixed in and not easy to locate.

I find the new site beyond disappointing. As other commentators have noted - the magic is gone. It was fun to log into the old pottermore under your site nickname and explore the world of HP. I loved the book walk throughs especially. I read the books a few years ago, and discovering each 'moment' was why I came to the site. And finding the random beans and frog cards was amusing and fun! I only got to book 4 in the walk through and I absolutely loved the nuggets of new writing from JKR that were discoverable through the moments. Now it makes me kind of sad that I won't be able to read those new tidbits.

The new site is terribly generic - and the LISTS! Please, someone, make them stop!!! Why on earth would you copy buzzfeed?! Most HP fans love the originality of the books... aping the format of another website is borderline insulting,

It's a sad day for me. Pottermore membership meant something to me, and I'm not a child by any means. I stayed up late and answered questions to get that membership when it first came out. Being sorted in Ravenclaw and getting my wand has meaning to me, but now it's all gone. I have no profile in Pottermore. I didn't need my user name to get in, it's like I didn't exist to Pottermore community anymore.

I'm in shock and sad at the loss of Pottermore. It's no longer special or meaningful.

I do enjoy the new info from JKR, but not liking the movies mixed in, not liking the format, just not liking it....

It is mobile compatable, which for someone like me whose laptop has gone to electronic heaven, is great. They have said they will bring back sorting and wands too. Personally, I never had time for potions and all that and the glitches were annoying at best, curse inducing at worst (is that why my laptop broke? Too many curses muttered at it?). Personally I found the safety net of protecting identity got in the way of any real community building on the old Pottermore. And as the rest of the books came out we got less moments and less interaction. I feel like JKR has a stronger hand in this new site and I'm excited to see what it evolves into.

But let's be honest - we all just want the old JKR site back with the door and the messy desk. ;)

They need to organise everything properly like the old pottermore was simple. You knew where you were in the story, now if you search for any of the books you're given a page of mix matched content and not even in chronological order from both the books and movies, which just confuses things further. As for the little articles their writing, as nice as they are to read they don't belong on Pottermore. I don't want this to be Buzzfeed if I want to read that kinds of thing i'll go to Buzzfeed. Give us all the little magical things back, I actually enjoyed finding weird and wonderful flavoured Beans and Chocolate Frog Cards.
