Here they use Magnesium Chloride, which smells faintly of chocolate, and I believe is subsidized by the windshield-washer-fluid manufacturers because its a bit like someone is smearing your windows/everything with WD-40...

according to some information I came across, we appear to use a 10-1 sand/salt mixture. some areas also add calcium chloride and some add magnesium chloride to the mixture. (We have a salt plant only 30 miles away)

Does your salt plant just process it, or is it also mined there? It would be cool to have your own salt mine. :handgestures-thumbupright: :happy-bouncygreen:
They tried to mix in sand around here a few years ago, but when the pavement cleared, people were skidding on the sand.

I'm so old that as a kid, I remember the street never being plowed.
Though they used to spread some coal clinkers at the intersections to increase traction. :P

I though salt had to be mined, 'didn't know you could grow it!!!

Most of the non-plant-covered surface of the Rocky Mountains is decaying granitel (read that sand), but they had to quit using it all along the front range due it contributing to the particulate make up of The Brown Cloud (the smog problem the city had/has - its only about a tenth of what it was thirty years ago, so they must be doing something right). Even with that we still need to get windshields replaced every three or so years, and paint jobs on our vehicles. Exposed surfaces tend to get sanded off and pitted.

I think I'm older than all of you, but also remember them slagging the intersections (and all of Howland Hill, which I've slid through the intersection at the bottom of when it wasn't taken care of in a timely manner).

What did you think would happen if you watered your plants with salt water? :laughing-rolling:

This could turn into a dangerous chain of events...

Is Kelp where Kelpies come from? Can we grow those from plants, too?

Acacia! Acacias do well in salty places. No wait! They shed a bazillion annoying little leaves that stick to your shoes and wiggle their way into the air intake of your car... No acacias.

Aside ~ When I fist saw the San Luis Valley (in Colorado, on the border with New Mexico, but centrally located east-to-west) there were all these really interesting white patches. They were acres and acres big, and when I walked on them it felt like smushing down the mole tunnels in the yard before you mow it. AND then...! The next day my favourite and expensive leather (L.L. Bean) sandals dissolved. We didn't have alkali flats back east....

Wow, road treatments vary. Glad we don't use acacias and have alkali flats in my neck of the woods. Here, the interstate is treated with calcium chloride if at least 3" of snow is expected, salt on major roads, sand everywhere else. The lesser traveled backroads get plowed eventually. Only wound up with about 4" and not the 9 we were expecting; most of us felt like we were cheated. lol. Was hoping for a snow day but would have settled for a delayed opening...got neither. Winds today were horrible...sunny for the most part (temps in the low 20's) but felt close to 0 all day, like really strong air conditioning was on. brrrrrrrrr!
