It started when a few of the students were annoyed with the curriculum in Charms. After many months of arguing with the Headmaster, Professors, and anyone else who would listen, to no avail, they felt they needed to take more concrete action. Before long half the school was involved. They essentially began going on strike. The strikes represented their frustration and upset-ed-ness, or umbrage. This was misspelled on the mission statements as "umbridge" (hey, they're kids studying magic, not spelling), and the strikes were quickly dubbed Umbridge-itis.
