11 intriguing moments from the third Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer
The Pottermore News Team

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Tuesday 25th Sept 2018

Here we go again! Today, we were treated to our third trailer for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Without further ado, let’s dive in and see what we spotted this time.
And, of course, let’s not forget to actually watch the trailer.

Okay, let’s go.

1. ‘A safe house in Paris’

(picture - View full screen

The trailer begins with a new secret meet-up between Dumbledore and Newt, discussing Newt’s impending trip to Paris. Dumbledore tells Newt of a ‘safe house’ – ‘should things go terribly wrong’. Or, alternatively, if Newt just fancies somewhere nice to go for a cup of tea. Oh, Dumbledore. Never change.
So, can we take a wild guess that this safe house will end up being Nicolas Flamel’s house, as mentioned in the previous trailer? We wouldn’t mind having a cuppa with a renowned alchemist who has discovered the secrets of eternal life either.

2. Grindelwald’s call to arms

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald)

Gellert Grindelwald’s grandiose speech has echoed through every trailer we’ve seen so far – and this one is no different. He wants wizards and witches to take their ‘rightful place’ in the world, he says. ‘Join me, or die,’ he finishes simply. Well, thanks for skipping straight to the point, Grinders.
Harry Potter fans know that Grindelwald’s obsession with creating a new hierarchy in the wizarding world is what tore his and Albus Dumbledore’s friendship apart. Now we’re actually seeing that ascent in action as he escapes MACUSA - and we’re guessing it’s not that easy to escape the American equivalent of the Ministry of Magic.
As we learn later in the trailer, lovely Magizoologist Newt Scamander is the one lumbered with the task of having to defeat him – but why poor Newt?

3. ‘Nagini…’

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

That’s right! Our first ‘gasp’ moment of this trailer reveals that Claudia Kim’s mysterious ‘circus attraction’ character can turn into a snake and is revealed to be called… ‘Nagini’. Well, we’ve heard that name before, haven’t we? Nagini is Voldemort’s loyal snake companion from the Harry Potter books.
Previously, this character had only been dubbed ‘the Maledictus’: a witch or wizard who carries a blood curse which ultimately turns them into a beast forever. So, it seems that Nagini has a sad backstory we never knew?

Also, assuming this is the same Nagini we know from Harry Potter, set in the 90s, this makes Nagini rather old, doesn’t it? And how did the character acquire a ‘blood curse’? So many questions, so little time.
To learn more about the Nagini we know from the Harry Potter books, take a look at our handy guide here.

4. The room of many questions

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) is seen briefly in a lit-up room covered in mysterious calculations, words and pictures of faces.
This scene has cropped up in previous trailers before – but this is our clearest shot of it so far.
Note the words ‘Credence Barebone’ on the wall behind Tina. And another name just above: Corvus Lestrange. We already know Leta Lestrange will feature prominently in the film – so who is Corvus? And how does that link to Credence?

5. Queenie’s fowl play

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

We briefly see Queenie curiously reaching out to a raven symbol. Now, the usually cheery Queenie has been looking very troubled during these trailers so far. Is she okay? Does she need a hug? We’ve still not seen any scenes of her and Jacob together either...

6. The Great Hall

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

We’d recognise those floating candles anywhere. We already knew we were heading back to Hogwarts, but our hearts did a miniature leap when we saw the Great Hall, the grand room that is home to the Sorting Ceremony on the first day of term, and many other fabulous feasts. It’s good to see it once again. Anyone fancy a singalong of ‘Hoggy Warty Hogwarts’ to celebrate?

7. Young Dumbledore and young Grindelwald

(picture -View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

He’s only there for a split second – but there is no mistaking young Grindelwald’s piercing stare. In the previous trailer, it was revealed that Dumbledore sees Grindelwald in the Mirror of Erised, but on that occasion, we saw Johnny Depp’s older incarnation.
This time, we see a younger Dumbledore, played by Toby Regbo, who appeared as young Dumbledore briefly in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, peering at his childhood friend played by Jamie Campbell Bower, who portrayed the younger Grindelwald in the same film! Will we be seeing a full flashback to the days of Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s youth, perhaps?

8. More new magic

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

We can expect the new film to introduce us to all sorts of exciting new spells and magical phenomena – judging on what we see in this trailer, and what we’ve seen in the others. Remember Dumbledore’s magic, floating glove? This trailer teases more fantastical things – such as some mysterious black banners floating around Paris.
We thought (rather horrifically) they were Dementors for a fleeting moment – but on second glance, we’re pretty sure they’re just banners. Every cloud...
Another scene sees Grindelwald encased in a golden orb while locked in a prison cell – a level of protection perhaps? – and later we also see a gentleman walk through a wall, but a little differently to how Harry and co. do it going through the barrier to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters.

(picture - View full screen

Suffice to say, we are very ready for a whole new magical education.

9. Poor Jacob tries out a Portkey

(picture -View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

The trailer features another amusing moment of poor Jacob being introduced to more strange, otherworldly things. Last time, he got to meet the impossibly old Nicolas Flamel. This time, he gets to enjoy the delights of a Portkey. We’re sure he’s going to love it and not be freaked out at all.

10. Kappa look at that

(picture - View full screen
Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

In one shot, Newt is accompanied by a ghost-like creature, with a mushroom shaped head emitting a golden shimmer. This is actually a Kappa, which Potter fans will remember from Harry’s Defence Against the Dark Arts classes as a dangerous water demon. So, firstly, what is this Kappa doing above ground, and why does he look so ghostly? Again, we might be looking at some new sort of magic here.
Speaking of magical creatures, we also spot the Zouwu, Niffler, Pickett the Bowtruckle and a Kelpie. Did you spot any more?

11. Oh, brother

(picture - View full screen
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald )

Now, we had an inkling that Newt and his brother Theseus (Callum Turner) might not be displaying much brotherly love in this film, what with us knowing that Theseus is now engaged to Newt’s former friend, Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz).
This trailer definitely confirms their animosity, especially when Tina gleefully ties up Theseus with magical ropes, and Newt claims it to be the best moment of his life. Well, this is going to be fun...
And the wait continues! But not for much longer.

Possible spoilers :
If Nagini was a human at some point, it is possible that Voldie had offspring.... ewww…. Could Creedence be his brother?

Ewwwww!
Trying to do the math ... Tom Riddle was born in 1926.
The first movie had to be in 1926 (Around the time Tom Riddle was born???) - we know this because The first edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was published in 1927, and in the movie he was about to send the book to the publishers and bring the printed book to tina personally.
Ergo: Credence could not be Tom Riddle's child

The movie is the 2nd of 5 - do we know what year it is based in? Has to be only a few years after the first one, because of the ages of the characters??? WW2 is from 1939-1945. I have no idea how JKR intends to split the events in her FB Series.

Grindelwald was defeated by Dumbledore in 1945, then incarcerated from 1945-1998 at Nurmengard, (the prison he had built for his own political enemies)

Interesting Note: Dumbledore (b. 1881) is only 16 years older than Newt (b. 1897)
We know that Newt and Tina have a child, but do not know when they were married, or when their child was born.

timeline:
Grindelwald: born 1883 - expelled from Durmstrang in 1899 - acquired Elder wand in 1910 (from Gregorovitch) - was defeated in 1945 - died by Riddle's hands in 1998
Dumbledore: born 1881 - father imprisoned in 1890 - started teaching at Hogwarts in 1913(?) (according to JKR's notes he was a Transfiguration Professor/ movie shows him as the DADA Professor (interesting - did he teach both?) - acquired Elder wand in 1945 - was Headmaster at Hogwarts beginning 1955 - died 1996 or 1997 (conflicting JKR dates)
Tom Riddle: born 1926 - started Hogwarts in 1938, graduated in 1945 - died 1998

Nice Timeline!
Since Dumbledore spent so long at Hogwarts, he pretty much could have taught quite a few subjects/classes, possibly in different years. He was supposed to be the shining star, brightest, prodigy and all that. (And besides, James was a Chaser in the books and Seeker in the movies; Ravenclaw House colours are supposed to be blue & bronze rather than the movies' blue & silver, so maybe the movie guys did the switch.) I wish they'd have him wear robes instead of a tweed suit, though....

The Trailer ~
There's that one shot of the WWII plane overhead that tripped me up. I thought this one was set in 1927, and maybe a year or so longer, so anything 1940s is a anachronism. WWI planes didn't have metal skins and the more streamlined shapes. Could it be a small breach in a Time Continuum? 'Not very Potter-esque, and not sure if there's a way a Time Turner could go forward many years.... I want to see how they explain this.
Could those filmy things floating overhead in the sky be the way to see through to future events? Does someone scry the scene? (Don'tcha wish Trelawney had taught us that?)

Stream of thought ~
We first meet Creedence at the orphanage (there seems to be a lot of that going around for bad guys), so he could be related to anyone. He's awfully powerful. I wonder if he's part of the LeStrange family (mostly because Leta-as-a-person is introduced in this film), and also wonder if the sister from the first film is genetically related or just also in the orphanage at the same time. If he could be related to Voldie (half-brother, cousin?), that would mean its through the powerful-but-whack-a-doodle Gaunt line. But then, there's also Grindelwald (with the light hair like the sister's) in the mix of possible lineage.

Newt and Tina's kid has to be born within a few years of 1980 because he and Luna end up married after the defeat of Voldie. That makes Tina & Newt kinda old to be parents. He's probably not more than five years either way of Luna. ...Need more backstory...

So much fun stuff to think about!!!
