One for each floor, but they constantly move around so its hard to find one. At 4pm the third floor one can be in the dungeons, sometimes a floor has no staircase at all until one decides to show up.



How does Harry figure out what propels the carriages from Hogsmeade Station to the Castle?

He actually doesn't have keys any at all. The title is left over from ancient times (now Wizards use Spells and Wards to keep anything "locked up"). Mostly it is an honorific title indicating a deep level of trust, and granting access to the most important secrets (like how to access the Headmaster's private bathrooms).
