Colin Farrell to star as wizard in JK Rowling's New York-set Fantastic Beasts

Colin Farrell will star as a New York wizard named Graves in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Farrell, who is currently appearing in HBO’s True Detective, will appear alongside Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander, the swashbuckling “magizoologist” at the centre of the new movie’s narrative. Scamander is said to meet his magical counterpart on a visit to the Big Apple, and Fantastic Beasts appears to be largely set in New York, with Rowling herself having hinted the film will reveal the existence of an American version of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry made famous in Harry Potter books and movies. An IMDb synopsis says the movie presents “the adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards, 70 years before Harry Potter reads his book in school”.

Redmayne signed on to play Scamander in June, following his best actor Oscar win in February for the title role in Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. Studio Warner Bros has also signed British-born actor Katherine Waterston, best known for her roles in Inherent Vice and Boardwalk Empire, to play the lead role of New York witch Porpentina. The cast also includes Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler.

Rowling is writing her debut screenplay for Fantastic Beasts, which is due to hit cinemas in 2016. The film’s title is borrowed from the first-year textbook that the character the Boy Who Lived uses in the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Rowling also published a “magizoology” compendium under the same title in 2001 to raise money for the charity Comic Relief.

Harry Potter regular David Yates will direct the new movie, which is expected to be the first of a new trilogy. The Potter films currently stand as the second-highest-grossing movie franchise in history, behind the more loosely linked Marvel superhero movies, generating $7.7bn (£4.6bn) in box-office receipts.

With David Yates at the helm, I most likely won't be the first one in line...

I would have preferred Chris Columbus but Yates did ok.

Colin Farrell ... wow, are they bringing in a heavy hitter. If he is not one of the main characters, I am concerned he will take away from the main characters. On the fence about this one - Colin is a great character actor so I am hoping it is a fit for him.

Preferring Mr. Columbus would be an understatement!

He was basically true to the books. However, he did not have to squeeze a tome into 2 hrs.
So much happened in the books that Yates directed ... and impossible to have everything included in the movie. I still think he did ok - other than way too many liberties were taken in DH2.

Since we are not working with a pre-read book that gives us 'visions' of what the movie should be like, I really think he will do okay for this one. At least, I am hoping he does. It is JK's first screenplay also ... so as long as she keeps it magical (and not that other horrid crap she' been writing) it should be ok.

I certainly would never expect everything in a book to be included in a film.
But I do object to removing actual plot items to insert stupid crap, for the purpose of increasing ticket sales.

I agree about that. It would have been nice if those movies were more true to the story rather than copping out with "true to the spirit" of the books.

The problem I have had with the non-CC ones is that they didn't stay "true to the spirit". It was as though the other directors tried to gild a lily with aluminum foil when they had perfectly amazing gold sitting there.

And Gambon should have been dragged by his ear to the books, locked in a room with them until he read and understood Dumbledore. I hated the dirty yellow fingernails and the stupid tied place in the beard, and that he looked like a homeless guy rather than a magical powerful wizard, and that he came off as a 'vengeful Greek god' instead of quirky Dumbledore... All of which are the responsibility of Cuaron.

* sigh * But, as you say, at least we don't have a written book to create expectations. I've loved Eddie Redmayne's acting since I saw Pillars of the Earth (wherein he started out being about 15yrs old and ended up being in his 60s), so am optimistic and excited about FB! That's not even counting in the the other heavy talent they are lining up. Plus it will be a period piece. Win-Win!!

I too am excited about the movie. I still have the naivety that it will be more than what we envisioned.
Please JKR and Yates ... don't crush the high expectation that I have for this movie!

We'll just have to wait and see.
