While not much will be revealed from J.K. Rowling's chat at Exeter College this past weekend, a new rather interesting tidbit was announced. Rowling commented on how both morality and mortality - which have been two big themes in the Harry Potter series - would continue in all her future works, including the sequel to The Cuckoo's Calling, out later this year.

One new note from the chat, for Exeter College’s 700th anniversary, was that Harry Potter was not originally Rowling's first name for her titular character, but Harry Batt.

Rowling’s “Mortality and Morality” talk filled the Sheldonian Theatre. Students who attended said that the author revealed interesting details about their much-loved series, such as her initial plan to name her central character Harry Batt instead of Harry Potter, as well as her love for Albus Dumbledore – a character she always saw as morally flawed.

Figgy's editorial comment:

Or... perhaps she's just messing with us, and I'm gullible enough to believe anything she says.... Harry Batt? Really? Sounds like she's trying to make fun of us hanging on her every word.

I agree it does sound a bit strange now. But had we never heard of Harry as Potter, would this really be such a stretch.
And as for her playing with us, I would hope she has better things to do with her time. :naughty:

Thanks for the update! :bow-yellow:

I do believe that Rowling loves to play word games and mess with people's minds. Of this there is no doubt. Because of her new found wealth, everyone hangs onto her every word and there are times (I am positive) that what she says is taken out of context or twisted around. This is sometimes easily done because Rowling likes to often put hidden meaning in her statements. Sometimes she likes to see if we are smart enough to catch whatever the undertones of her messages are. sometimes she likes to see if her words have power. Sometimes she likes to see how much untruth she can fling at us before we call her bluff.

but Harry Batt ... really???
there was, a very long time ago, an 'extra' page that you won if you 'clicked the right object, or followed a proper sequence of events' on her original site. It contained the early names of the year one students, including Harry, which showed how the names evolved - scratching out the first thoughts, etc until she settled on the name that she liked best. But buggered if I can find that image. Thought I saved a screenshot of all the extras but I am unable to find them ... maybe they got lost when my computer crashed a few years age ... maybe I misfiled them ... maybe 'insert excuse here'

I was trying to find it because I thought that the origins of Harry's name was there.

but I did find this: Accio Quotes

Barnes and Noble interview, March 19, 1999

Why did you name Harry Potter -- Harry Potter?

Because Harry is one of my favorite boy's names. But he had several different surnames before I chose Potter. Potter was the name of a brother and sister who I played with when I was very young. We were part of the same gang and I always liked that surname.

I remember that "reward" from her original site (which I am annoyed she took down as I used to look through old stuff occasionally and dislike that she completely disregarded all the enjoyment we got from the original stuff). And I don't remember any "Batt" on it, and do remember the thing you're saying about how/why she picked Potter.

It would seem that Ms. Rowling has much in common with her Headmaster.

Now that Howler has jogged my feeble memory, I too remember her going on about choosing the Potter name.

LOL - I do believe she is starting to make things up now ... her memory is getting flawed indeed.
I suppose when there are so many thoughts running around in a world that she created, and when she started thinking about how she would have 're-written' it, her thoughts of past, present etc are merging and there may not be any original truth left. Good thing we have the 'Accio" and such site with her original quotes to rely on.

I must say I'm not really enthused about another in this series...

Ok - I got her books mixed up ... I was thinking she was writing a sequel to The Casual Vacancy
my bad ... but if she was, it would be the beginning of a "Hollywood" daytime soap drama

The Cuckoo Calling wasn't as bad as the CV ... not great, but not a repulsive read.

maybe if she continues with the light PI type books it will give her something to do rather than destroying our beloved HP books with her unkind hind-sights
