The holiday has been observed in Canada since at least 1845 - it is in honor of Queen Victoria's birthday, which was May 24th. It is now celebrated as a tribute to the current sovereign's birthday. Queen Victoria's reign was 63 years and seven months (May 1, 1876 – January 22, 1901), which is longer than that of any other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history, and is known as the Victorian era. Queen Elizabeth II has been queen since Feb 6, 1952 and is very close to surpassing Queen Victoria's record.

I believe some cities actually have parades to celebrate ...

I was giving a tour through one of the Gingerbread Victorian houses in Georgetown in the '90s and a Dutch guy looked at me, perplexed, and asked why we call them Victorians when we fought a war to separate from England.

Are they planning a celebration when QEII passes Queen Victoria's reign? Feb of this year hit the 63 years part, seven months should be September this year.

I too find it difficult to understand the fascination some have with the British. :confusion-seeingstars:  :?

"Victorian" is just an era; no less and no more. I guess if you are the longest reigning sovereign you get to have something named after you - only fair. I know there are a lot of people obsessed with royalty (don't understand this oddity, but it is undeniable), but I do believe that England, at one time, was a world power ... they owned a lot of countries, a lot of land. It is understandable that they can claim an era. PS. I believe Victorian homes are beautiful and charming - in a class of their own!

I hope she reigns for 70 years. The less time Charles is on the throne, the better.
And here is the question of the day... Why did Edward VIII have to give up the throne to marry a divorcee but Prince Charles is still in line to throne? (well, I know the answer, but still think it is wrong)
(The 1772 Royal Marriages Act requires members of the Royal Family to obtain permission from the Sovereign to marry. Queen Elizabeth II gave her permission for Prince Charles to marry Camilla, and more recently for Prince William to marry Catherine Middleton. Edward VIII did not have the sovereign's permission)

The UK is completing it's disintegration as we speak.

Before long the castle will be the home of a Burger Queen*.

* Would you like chips with that?

I'm kinda glad Edward VIII wasn't ruling in WWII, he was as much an appeaser as Chamberlain... Picked the wrong side to be nice to and all that.
