FLOOD STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE QUAD CITIES IA IL
1015 AM CDT TUE MAR 18 2014

.RECENT WARM WEATHER HAS RESULTED IN ICE JAMS ON THE ROCK RIVER.

THE MAJOR ICE JAM NEAR COMO PARTIALLY BROKE UP SUNDAY AFTERNOON BUT
DID NOT GET PAST THE BEND IN THE RIVER SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 30. RIVER
DATA OVERNIGHT SHOWS A SHARP DROP IN RIVER LEVELS NEAR COMO
SUGGESTING THE ICE JAM MAY HAVE MOVED SINCE MONDAY. ADDITIONAL ICE
JAMS COULD DEVELOP ANYWHERE ALONG THE RIVER IN WHITESIDE COUNTY DUE
TO NEAR SOLID ICE DOWNSTREAM TO HILLSDALE. THERE ARE ALSO AREAS OF
CONGESTED ICE UPSTEAM OF STERLING ROCK FALLS.

RIVER FORECASTS INCLUDE PAST PRECIPITATION AND FORECAST RAINFALL FOR
THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

Yikes. Fast melting this year is causing a lot of ice jams this year. I've never heard ice crack when it heaves. Think it would be a cool sound.

I can't believe the huge blocks of ice along the river banks around here. I need to get my camera out before they all melt.

OH, PLEASE!!! :naughty:

You have a camera (or three) hanging from your neck more often then Italian men have gold chains around theirs... :laughing-rolling:

BTW: snapping ice is pretty cool sounding. :handgestures-thumbup:

LOL. maybe ... but I look a whole lot less cool that those Italian men.

I wasn't even sure it made a sound; just sounded logical that it should.
Maybe one day I will get the chance to hear it ... from a safe distance.

Well, Howler...have camera will travel! Works for Muggle Son sometimes. Anyhoo, cracking ice on a river...weird sounding the first time I heard it. Thought it was tree limbs coming down. Heard it a couple of times on my walk to the Post Office. Got used to hearing it. Love nature.

it is only pretty in pictures ... not on roads; not on driveways; not on sidewalks;

our forecast is for snow turning into freezing rain ... oh joy!

As much as I love snow, I'm saying the same thing as everyone else now...ENOUGH ALREADY! Messy weather tomorrow morning. Nothing substantial - just an inch or two with a little sleet maybe - but enough to make a mess. Saturday is the question day for us. Looks like we may still get (ugh) plowable snow. Crap.
