For the new year, the Company furloughed ten from my department.

Holiday cheer holds no boundries. How sad indeed.
Not you though, right?

No, they were all switchmen. Actually because of a retirement, I moved up to number six in seniority.

Why would they lay off the guys who are "boots on the ground"?

Operating decisions are made with the intent to bolster stock prices. They have nothing to do with safety, efficiency, or productivity.
Once the the company is bled dry, these parasites will move on to their next victim.

The mastermind behind this is the same person who killed Borders Books, among others...

I hate to ask this, but are the stock holders really that blind? Or just that greedy? When research is done on a company, safety is a consideration.

so is this a bump up the stock thing, then let the major stockholders bailing out by selling their shares. Sounds like someone is being blackmailed and will do whatever is necessary/no matter what the human cost to meet their goal. Don't they realize, that businesses are something more than paper?

What a wonderful way to start the new year, Paint. Ditto Howler - that must be one group of greedy sobs. Howler - the only paper they seem to be seeing is the green one.

That's exactly what they did to the steel industry in Youngstown in the 1980s.
They'd (** cough - Lykes Corporation - cough **) buy a mill, vampirize the money, go to the workers saying how they HAD to make repairs and improvements or the place would have to shut down but there wasn't any money and if the workers didn't allow them access to the pension funds and lower expectations they would just shut the mill down anyway. All sorts of people I went to school with, or their dads, ended up with nothing, and it only took about four years from start to finish. Then the bad guys would just move on to the next place to strip, neglect, and kill off.
