Stamps are portkeys; when affixed to the item, it automatically apparates to the destination printed on the item.
(I wonder how we could make this happen in our world???)

What is a portkey?

A Portkey is the shift button on the left of Muggle computers and typewriterts.

*sits here pushing the shift key multiple times - sobs because nothing happens*

The House Ghost's responsibility is to escort all students (of corresponding house) to their dormitories after each evening meal; they would have met him after their first meal at Hogwarts.

How is it that Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington is "nearly" headless?

Sir Nick was given a reprieve at the very last moment before the executioner was to swing his axe, so his friends teased him about how close the whole thing was with the nick-name "Nearly Headless".

How did Hermione find The Hogwarts Express for her first trip on it?

M. McGonagall attached/included a note with her letter.

When Dobby visited Harry (while in the hospital wing), what punishment had he recently given himself?

Dobby imposed a fine on himself (which he would give to S.P.E.W.), of six weeks pay, before he saw Harry in the Hospital Wing.

Twice the lie that a whopper is.

How was Rita Skeeter able to find out such intimate details regarding Harry or Hermione (and write about them)?

Since wizards don't use computers (thus eliminating Google), she used The Restricted Sections of Libraries. The fun part of that is using "Whos W'ho of the Wizarding World"; just touch the appropriate entry with your wand and a full-sized holographic image appears before the user, complete with hundreds of details of the subject's life.

Each has been created by famous architectural artist (most of which are identified as Muggles, but were actually wizards living undercover, so to speak). The Davinci staircases are especially intriguing.

Why did Durmstrang arrive at Hogwarts in a ship?
