A Spell backfired causing hundreds of cauldrons to simultaneously melt and dump their contents, effectively smothering all the fires. This created great quantities of a grayish-green smoke which, for quite some time, churned around the area and blocked everyone's ability to see more than a hand's width from their own faces.

They all first met on the trio's very first day at Hogwarts. Myrtle has a slight 'thing' for anyone wearing glasses, so she personally introduced herself to Harry (while they were in the small room waiting to be sorted). Ron and Hermione were near Harry and also said hello to her.
