A school year is from Jan 2 - Dec 31; there are 12 grades/years; some students complete school by 15 (rare) and some students complete school by 27 (also rare). There has only been one documented incident where a father and son were in the same grade/same classroom.

Every once in a while a student will execute an amazing piece of magic (accidental or intentional) that simply needs recognition. Fred and George were given their award when they vanished the Potions Classroom, despite all the wards and spells on the Castle in general and that room especially. When they brought it back, without assistance, even the other teachers had to appreciate their abilities. (Snape was inside it at the time, he was not amused.)
