When Jr was twelve he was practicing an Alohomora Spell which caused the door to quickly swing open just as Sr was reaching for the doorknob. The door hit with enough force to break Sr's fingers.

The Dursley's went on a holiday (which did not include Harry); Mrs Figg was out of town and unable to babysit. Dumbledore made the arrangements.

They are used in Potions that have to do with beautifying and calming. The Runespoor is known for being overwhelmingly gorgeous, and this quality comes through in all the Potions the eggs are included in.
