Because humans are saturated with chemical smells - perfume, deodorant, hair spray, shampoo, etc. Odd though, they seem to be friendly with Prof. Snape.

Centaurs are friendly to humans, its just the cultural customs don't translate well. For example, humans don't understand that a solid kick is intended as an endearment.


Why was Ron wishing he and Harry had been told to follow butterflies? Why were they told to follow anything?

They were told to follow the bowtruckles ... he got really bored, fell asleep and lost track. They were following it to find wand wood for Ollivander.
